DEFINE YOUR PURPOSE AND REQUIREMENTS (START HERE)

Before you sketch layouts or compare equipment, define what you want your range to accomplish. If you’ve already started building, that’s fine too. Clarifying your goals now helps you spot gaps and make better decisions on the remaining design and equipment choices.

Start with your use case:

  • Skill sustainment for duty/carry, home defense readiness, or recreation?

  • Handgun-only, pistol-caliber carbine, or rifle-rated?

  • Low to moderate round counts, or more frequent, high-volume use?

  • One lane for solo reps, or multi-lane use for family and guests?

Pick a range profile early to keep decisions simple and focused as you plan your layout, features, and equipment:

  • Essential: Clean, purpose-built, reliable; minimal complexity

  • Entertainer: Enhanced experience for guests and variety of use

  • Premium/fully customized: Highest-end finishes, comprehensive technology integration, and maximum personalization

With your goals defined, you can plan the space and core systems around your intended use, then select range equipment that fits your layout and vision.

DO YOU NEED PERMITS OR APPROVALS TO BUILD A HOME SHOOTING RANGE?

Building a home gun range is possible in many areas, but feasibility depends on local zoning, discharge ordinances, building permits, and insurance requirements. Start by contacting a range consultant to confirm you’re allowed to operate an indoor range at your address, then validate what your jurisdiction requires for construction, ventilation, and noise.

Address approvals early to keep your project moving smoothly and your range design on track. Indoor home ranges can be possible in many locations, but they’re often shaped by local rules and permitting realities.

  • Because rules differ by city and county, we recommend contacting an Action Target consultant to help you navigate feasibility and compliance. Constraints may include:

    • Local building codes may outline requirements for an indoor home shooting range or prohibit construction in certain areas.

    • Local zoning regulations may prohibit firearm discharge in residential areas or restrict shooting ranges to specific zones.

    • Environmental and health regulations (local, state, and federal) can dictate minimum standards for air quality, ventilation, filtration, and contaminant control.

    • Homeowner’s associations (HOAs) may prohibit, restrict, or tightly control where and how an indoor home shooting range can be built or maintained.

  • Many homeowners don’t realize this up front: some insurers may require a rider, impose conditions, or decline coverage depending on how the range is built and used. Address this early before construction.

  • Some homeowners build the room first and complete the range components later, which can be a practical way to manage timelines.

  • The key is to plan the space with the end use in mind so your layout, penetrations, and utilities support a home shooting range from the start and align with local permitting and inspection requirements.

  • Before you commit to construction, review your plan with your architect/contractor team and a range consultant so you can move forward with confidence.

  • Early planning checklist:

    • Confirm zoning and local rules for firing firearms on your property

    • Identify required permits and inspections, and when each occurs

    • Validate structure, electrical capacity, and HVAC/ventilation feasibility

    • Account for long-lead items like bullet traps, ventilation components, and doors

HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU NEED FOR A HOME GUN RANGE?

How much space you need for a home shooting range depends on your intended distances, calibers, and lane count. Plan for lane width, safe entry/exit paths, and room for a bullet trap, baffles, ventilation ducting, and maintenance access, not just target distance. Your room is part of your ballistic containment system. The structure must match what you plan to shoot.

SPACE PLANNING

For home indoor shooting ranges, construction requires substantial, reinforced materials rather than relying on residential framing. Preferred performance-oriented construction targets include:

  • Walls: solid concrete construction at least ~8” thick (filled CMU, tilt-up, or poured in place) and 4,000 PSI

  • Ceiling: should be 4,000 PSI concrete as well; avoid assemblies with voids where ballistic protection is compromised

  • Floor: use at least 3,000 PSI concrete, with 5,000 PSI preferred for added durability and safety

PRACTICAL SPACE GUIDELINES

  • Preferred (not required) two-lane baseline width: plan for a little over 8-10 ft to accommodate for two full 4-ft lanes
  • Lane width: 4 ft minimum per lane (industry standard)
  • Lane length: the lane can be as long as your space allows. Set aside about 15 ft for the bullet trap and 15 ft behind the firing line, then whatever length remains becomes your target distance
  • Height + airflow planning: 12–14 ft is ideal, but many home shooting ranges can work with less; Action Target can often design around lower ceiling heights depending on layout, baffles, and ventilation needs

SAFETY LAYERS TO INCLUDE

  • Ceiling baffles to manage stray rounds and protect infrastructure

  • Ballistic-rated doors or a controlled entry/vestibule

  • Clearly marked exits and unobstructed pathways

  • Shooting stalls to reduce cross-lane risk and improve shooter comfort

  • Acoustic fascia on baffles, ceilings, and walls to help control reverberation, reduce noise fatigue, and improve comfort and communication in a confined indoor space.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER BEFORE YOU COMMIT TO A LAYOUT

  • Is there enough length to build an adequate range while staying within property lines and setbacks?

  • Do local building ordinances allow a structure tall enough to function as a shooting range (including baffles and ventilation)?

  • If you’re remodeling, is the existing structure suitable for the added walls, ceiling systems, ventilation, and range equipment?

  • Do you have a suitable containment structure, such as poured concrete walls or filled CMU block, to safely contain rounds fired?

WHAT VENTILATION DOES AN INDOOR HOME SHOOTING RANGE REQUIRE?

An indoor home shooting range requires purpose-built ventilation to control airborne lead and combustion byproducts. Your goal is consistent downrange airflow, slight negative pressure, and effective filtration (commonly HEPA as part of the system design). Avoid tying range airflow into household HVAC. If ventilation isn’t engineered correctly, the range may be unsafe to use, regardless of how strong the structure is. Airflow is one of the most important systems in an indoor shooting range. It must be engineered, not improvised.

  • Use a dedicated system (not tied into household HVAC)

  • Maintain negative pressure and directional airflow downrange

  • Ensure consistent airflow performance at the firing line

  • Incorporate proper filtration (commonly HEPA as part of the filtration strategy)

  • Integrate a heating and cooling system for year-round temperature control
  • Ventilation isn’t “install and forget.” You’ll need:

    • Filter replacement intervals based on usage

    • Routine inspection and performance checks

    • Housekeeping that supports lead and dust control (avoid dry sweeping; use appropriate methods and tools)

Because home-range ventilation is complex, it should be designed and installed by a qualified mechanical contractor. Action Target can provide specifications and design guidance, but the contractor typically supplies and installs the ventilation equipment.

NOISE CONTROL AND COMFORT (FOR YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBORS)

Indoor home shooting ranges can be designed for better sound control by combining sound-isolating construction with range-specific treatments. Action Target sound abatement treatments can be installed on the walls and ceilings throughout the range, and can also be added to ceiling baffles to reduce reverberation and help keep noise contained.

PRACTICAL NOISE-CONTROL STRATEGIES

  • Sound abatement options: Add acoustic materials to the baffles, ceilings, and walls using options like acoustic tile, PEPP, wood fiber, or SureStop™ rubber, depending on your style preference and sound-control desire.
  • Sound-sealed doors: use gasketed frames and proper door construction to limit sound transfer

  • Seal penetrations: properly seal lighting, ventilation, and electrical penetrations to maintain sound control performance

The goal is a range that feels comfortable to train in consistently, with noise controlled inside the shooting bay and minimized outside it.

TARGETS AND BACKSTOPS (CONTAINMENT + TRAINING VALUE)

Your home shooting range is defined by two essentials: containment and capability. The bullet trap is the foundation, built to safely capture rounds in an indoor environment. The target system builds on that foundation, shaping how you train, how quickly you can run reps, and how much flexibility you have for different drills.

  • Rubber berm bullet traps (typical recommendation): effective and quiet, with periodic maintenance/cleanout based on use

  • Rubber block bullet traps (space-driven alternative): an option when the footprint won’t accommodate a rubber berm system; typically used when length or space constraints drive the decision

  • Trap options by caliber: Rubber berm traps are available in standard configurations, with an optional .50 BMG upgrade. Rubber block wall traps can be paired with 1/4″, 3/8″, or 1/2″ steel backings based on caliber preference and shooting frequency.

  • Bottom line: for most home shooting ranges, the choice comes down to available space and how the trap fits the lane length and room layout
  • Wireless target retrievers (most common): adjust target distance from the firing line in seconds, keep your rhythm, and maximize reps without going downrange.
    • More purposeful practice: set repeatable distances for zeroing and drills, with options like built-in drills, timing, and lighting to keep sessions structured.
    • A better range experience: simple controls make the range easier for family and guests to use, with room to expand into more automation and feedback later.
  • Tactical configurations (space-dependent): in larger home shooting ranges, portable bullet traps can support more dynamic setups, but that requires additional space and safety planning

POWER, LIGHTING & CONTROLS

Strong infrastructure makes everything else easier.

Core considerations:

  • Dedicated electrical circuits and proper load planning

  • Bright, consistent lane lighting (often with zoned or dimmable options)

  • Emergency lighting and clear controls

  • Centralized control options for ventilation/lighting/targets when desired

RULES, SECURITY & DAILY OPERATIONS (RUN IT LIKE A PRO SHOOTING RANGE)

Even in a private environment, consistent rules prevent complacency.

MINIMUM POSTED SOPs SHOULD COVER

  • Hot/cold range indicators and procedures

  • Firearm handling expectations and muzzle discipline rules

  • Required PPE (eye/ear protection)

  • Malfunction procedures and cease-fire protocols

  • Emergency plan (first aid, comms, exits)

SECURITY FUNDAMENTALS

  • Controlled access (locked entry)

  • Authorized users only

  • Secure firearm and ammo storage in compliance with local requirements

    • Noise mitigation effectiveness

BUDGET BENCHMARKS

Costs vary based on lane length, room design, sound control, and equipment selection. For range equipment alone, many home projects fall in the $60,000 to $250,000 range. You should also budget for ventilation and the room build-out as separate project costs, and keep in mind both can vary widely based on feasibility, footprint, lane count, duct runs, and whether you want heating and cooling. Don’t forget to include delivery and installation, along with architect, general contractor, and mechanical contractor costs to design and build the space properly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes, if your local zoning, building code, inspections, environmental, and spacing requirements allow it.

Often, yes. Many projects require approvals tied to structural work, ventilation, electrical, and sound control.

It varies, but a common (not required) baseline is two lanes at a little over 8-10 ft wide. Plan about 15 ft for the bullet trap and 15 ft behind the firing line, then use the remaining length as your target distance.

12–14 ft is ideal for space for ceiling baffles, ventilation, and lighting, but many home shooting ranges can work with less. Action Target can often design around lower ceilings depending on layout and ventilation needs.

A purpose-built ventilation system that maintains downrange airflow, negative pressure, and effective filtration (often HEPA), not tied into household HVAC.

Target retriever systems are the most common target solution, and rubber berm bullet traps are a typical choice when space allows (rubber block wall traps are used when space is tighter).

Action Target supports range equipment (bullet containment, target systems, and shooting stalls), coordinates ventilation, and provides post-build service and maintenance. You’ll manage the room construction and infrastructure through your contractor.

If you enjoy a few rounds of indoor shooting, you may have wondered whether you can put a shooting range in your house.

Our homes are now our one-stop source of all entertainment—we can shop, exercise, and watch movies all from the comfort of our home. However, your home can also house more extreme hobbies, like shooting ranges.

You can put a shooting range in your house as long as it is safe and functional. While residential shooting ranges are legal in the USA, you should always check local regulations and ensure that you are taking safety and noise control precautions to avoid complaints from your neighbors.

This article explores 4 facts you should keep in mind if you’re interested in building a shooting range in your house

Facts About Residential Shooting Ranges

You can put a shooting range in your house, provided you follow a range of regulations and guidelines.

Some key facts to consider when building a residential shooting range include:

  • Residential shooting ranges are legal in America.
  • You must soundproof your shooting range.
  • Safety precautions are crucial.
  • It’s best to get an architect to build your shooting range.

This section considers facts to know if you want to build a shooting range in your house, including legal requirements and construction suggestions.

1. Residential Shooting Ranges Are Legal in America

Before you begin to construct or even design a residential shooting range, you should check whether it is legal in your area. In most areas in the USA, residential or in-home shooting ranges are legal.

However, you do need to follow area-specific zoning rules and regulations.

Most local councils will require that you register your in-home shooting range. Other regulations you might need to follow are:

  • A limit on the number or type of firearms you have within your shooting range.
  • Constructing your range with soundproof walls
  • Having a range of safety precautions in place, including a secure place to store the firearms.
  • The building that houses the range must be reinforced and repaired when necessary.

To understand the regulations behind a residential shooting range in your state, consult with your local council. NRAExplore has also collated a helpful document which details the Gun Range Protection Statues in each US state.

You can also consult with your shooting range provider to understand the rules and regulations within your area.

2. You Must Soundproof Your Shooting Range

Shooting can be an incredibly noisy activity. When building your shooting range, you should ensure that noise pollution is limited both in the range and in the area surrounding it.

To minimize noise indoors:

  • Use sound-absorbing materials when designing the shooting range space, such as foam panels and acoustic partitions.
  • Keep noise levels in the range at a maximum of 85 decibels using mufflers and suitable firearms.

To minimize the noise in the surrounding areas of the range:

Architects and shooting range consultants will be able to suggest suitable materials and give you tips on how best to construct the range.

3. Safety Precautions Are Crucial

If you are putting a shooting range in your house, you need to take precautions to protect the people who are using it and the people around the range.

Some of the ways for ensuring the safety of your shooting range include:

  • Install bullet traps. Bullet traps receive and cushion bullets, ensuring that the bullets do not go astray. They also ensure that the bullets cause little to no environmental damage.
  • Use safety baffles. Safety baffles are an integral component of a shooting range – they are significant if the shooting range is in your home. They surround the range’s ceilings and walls and contain any misfired bullets, protecting the shooter.
  • Ensure downrange deflections. It would be best to build areas in the shooting range to ensure any misfired bullets will be directed downrange.

4. It’s Best to Get an Architect to Build Your Shooting Range

You can put a shooting range in an already built house or in a house that has not been constructed.

The process is different for the two different types of construction. Working with an architect and shooting range consultant is a good idea for both types of construction.

An Existing House

You may have an already built home that you want to incorporate a shooting range in. Provided you have space and the proper budget, this is possible.

Many people choose to build a shooting range in a basement, a barn, or an external storage bunker.

Some of the adaptations you may need to make to ensure space can house a shooting range include:

  • Reinforcing the ceiling and walls with cement to ensure that they are both sound and bulletproof
  • Adding in ventilation through fans, vents, and other apparatus
  • Deciding on and laying out the number of stalls you want in the range.
  • Choosing and installing target systems along with bullet traps

A House That Is Being Built

If you are in the process of constructing a house, work with your architect, shooting range consultant, and builder to design and build a shooting range

You can choose to build your shooting range in the basement of your house or as a separate structure.

You should keep the same considerations in mind as building a shooting range in an existing house. However, you’ll enjoy more flexible options and the ability to customize your range in more ways.

Any avid shooter would love nothing more than to step into a private indoor shooting range to unwind after a long day.

The chance to practice when we want to practice despite the weather, time, or day of the week is inviting. The question looms whether it is legal to build an indoor shooting range.

A thorough investigation of local laws, rules, and regulations is the only way to determine the possibility of building an indoor shooting range in your home. You should also consider other factors that may become issues in constructing a home shooting range.

When constructing a home shooting range, a discussion of air quality should take place to ensure the safety of your family. A professional HVAC ventilation system is required and should be reviewed with experts such as Action Target, who can help you design and install the proper system https://actiontarget.com/about/contact-us/

Can You Have a Gun Range in Your Home?

It is possible to have a gun range in your home if you meet the building and zoning requirements. Some residential building codes don’t reference gun ranges. In this case, the zoning and inspection officials refer to commercial shooting range codes that impose local requirements.

Legal challenges to building a home shooting range can come in several different guises. Where you live is a big determinant of what sorts of laws and regulations may affect your ability to construct an indoor home shooting range. Among the legal constraints you may face are:

  • Local building codes may directly address the requirements of an indoor home shooting range or expressly forbid the construction in some areas.
  • Local zoning regulations may prohibit the discharge of a firearm or specify that all shooting ranges be confined to specific building zones within a city or county.
  • Local, state, and federal environmental and health regulations dictate minimum standards for air quality and contaminant controls.
  • Homeowner’s associations may prohibit or highly control where and how indoor shooting ranges can be built or maintained.

Before making any plans or committing to building an indoor shooting range, you must review with your architect and ensure you comply with your local regulations.

How Much Space Do I Need for a Home Gun Range?

Most experts recommend installing a two-lane shooting range, measuring roughly 8 ft wide by 100 ft long. Each lane should be a minimum of 4ft wide and  75 ft long. Space is required behind the shooter and behind the bullet trap. A twelve to fourteen-foot ceiling height is recommended to give adequate ceiling height above the shooter while also securing space above the shooter for baffles, ventilation, and lights in order to ensure ventilation has the proper airflow over the shooter it is recommended that at a minimum, you allow for at least 15 feet of open space behind the shooter or firing line. This allows for laminar airflow to travel over the shooter keeping gases and airborne lead moving down range to be filtered through your Hepa filtration.

There are several questions to be answered about the space you have in order to install range equipment:

  • Is there enough length to build an adequate range and stay within my property’s setbacks and property lines?
  • Do height requirements in my city zoning and building ordinances allow a building tall enough to function as a shooting range?
  • If you intend to remodel a portion of your home, is the structure suitable for the additional walls and equipment necessary for the shooting range?
  • Do I have an adequate structure, such as pured concrete walls or filled CMU block to contain rounds fired?

What are the Requirements for Ventilation in a Home Shooting Range?

The National Institute of Occupations Safety and Health (NIOSH) dictates the standards for air quality in shooting ranges. In general, ranges must maintain negative air pressure in the firing area, trap the particulate matter generated by shooting, and release clean air into the atmosphere.

There are several federal guidelines on air quality issues for indoor shooting ranges, and it is recommended that these be followed for private ranges as well.

How Do I Build a Safe Indoor Shooting Range for my Home?

There are industry standards covering equipment, design, and installation of this equipment require professionals who are familiar with these industry standards. Contact https://actiontarget.com/about/contact-us/.

Can I Get Homeowner’s Insurance if I Build a Home Shooting Range?

Are you wondering how many acres you will need for a gun range? We will discuss the amount of land needed to build your shooting range.

What is the Average Amount of Land Needed for an Indoor Gun Range?

The average indoor firing range has a footprint of 2 acres of land. You will need acreage to support each firing bay, retail space, register, classroom, bathrooms, storage, office space, and parking.

The average range sizes are between 10,000 and  20,000 sq. ft. and range from 1-2 Bays with 7 to 14 lanes.

What Is the Purpose of Your Gun Range?

The amount of land required for a gun range will vary depending on the usage.

There are choices to make when you decide to have a range. You must determine if you will have an emphasis on range, retail, training and/or custom builds. Once this is decided it will be essential to work with an architect to review these choices in order to determining space requirements. A few questions that need to be addressed upfront include:

  • How many bays and shooting lanes are you planning to install?
  • What products and quantities are you planning to retail in your store?
  • Will your retail space focus on firearms and accessories?
  • How large of a retail space is needed to support displays and inventory?
  • Are you planning to provide regular training classes and if so how much capacity does your classroom require?
  • Do you expect to have a gunsmith or armorer onsite? If either will you provide the option to have customers customize their firearms?
  • Will your staff require offices, cubicles, lockers, or lunch area?
  • Will you provide uni-sex bathrooms or designated bathroom?
  • Are you planning to install wash sinks outside the range?
  • Do you plan to have a VIP lounge or snack area?

Deciding the purpose for your range will help you determine how much space you need.

How Much Would it Cost to Build a Gun Range from the Ground Up?

It will cost approximately $350,000 for a range equipment and bullet containment. This does not include the land, or building cost.

If you buy a piece of property, you need to make sure you can obtain the permits to develop the property for the purpose of a shooting range. Action Target technical sales representatives can help you through the process. Find your local representative at https://actiontarget.com/contact-us/.

Where do I Find My State Gun Laws?

To find the laws that govern guns and their uses, you should check with your local and state agencies. You can find these agencies with a few quick Google searches. Be sure to enter your city, state, and county names as well as the term “gun laws and ordinances.”

These Government offices will be able to tell you where and when you are allowed to fire your guns.

  • City
  • County
  • State
  • And Local Law enforcement

You are not allowed to fire a gun within the city limits in most states unless you are at an indoor gun range. Check your state-specific regulations.

Should I Buy an Existing Gun Range?

Buying an existing gun range is beneficial because it is already zoned as a firing range. It is less expensive to buy an existing range because you do not have to worry about the expense of construction. It is recommended that the property be inspected by a licensed inspector before purchasing it and that you confirm with the state that the range is compliant with all local and state regulations.

If you are interested in buying an existing gun range, a quick google or Zillow search in your desired area is the easiest way to determine what is available.

A shooting range is a welcome addition to your home, as it is a great way to entertain guests, hone your skills as a marksman, or simply celebrate the Second Amendment. It takes a lot of planning, however, and should not be a task taken lightly. Having a shooting range is a huge responsibility and comes with many risks. You have to think about equipment, safety, insurance, and maintenance on top of everything else.

This can seem like an awful lot to think about and could even deter you from getting started. The cost alone could be something too much for some. It helps to have some outside experience to lend a hand in this venture. No need to stress though, here is a handy guide to get you on your way to putting together your own home shooting range and how to make sure everyone stays safe while firing away.

Know the Purpose of Your Shooting Range

This is something you have to figure out before committing to building a shooting range at home. The last thing you want is to put together a shooting range only to regret building it.

Some questions you can begin answering yourself to figure out the purpose of your shooting range include:

  • Do you have a career in law enforcement or the military and want a private place to sharpen your skills?
  • Do you want a place to keep friends entertained?
  •  Is this going to be something you want to use for recreation in general, even privately?

All of these questions can help decide what direction to go in when designing your range.

Experienced Shooting Range Vendors Are Available

Ultimately a home shooting range is a great investment. It is a great way to privately practice self-defense, learn about firearms, and get yourself acquainted with the culture that comes with being a marksman. You can practice long distances if you like to hunt, close range if you are trying to get comfortable with pistols, or any other number of ways to utilize a shooting range for your own personal growth.

There are so many people to talk to about the joys of owning and operating a private shooting range, so do not hesitate to ask around and get to know some of the gun owners and range regulars in your community. Talking with a local range master is a great way to get some insight and learn a thing or two from a pro if you are new to the dos and do-nots of life on the range.

This seems like the obvious play but should be mentioned no matter how handy you think you are. There are tons of vendors worldwide that will offer their services to guide either you or a third-party general contractor to help build it. There is a lot that goes into installing an extension of your house specifically designed for live firearms. A vendor will be able to assist the contractor in terms of safety and suggesting the layout.

  • You should always go with a vendor, despite it costing more.
  • Cost should not be something you should be cutting corners around when it comes to building a shooting range.
  • It is so much more than simply shooting a target in your basement.
  • A vendor will help make judgment calls on whether or not your house can even support something like this or figure out where the best place to ventilate gunsmoke would be.

If you are inexperienced in building shooting ranges in your home, then it is all but decided that you should have someone helping you out with expert guidance. Leave it to the professionals and take the stress out of your life, trying to make every single decision yourself based on guessing. All it takes is one oversight for someone to possibly lose their life. It is not worth the risk of building a shooting range alone.

Plan for Your Shooting Range

Planning extends outside of literally planning how to build your shooting range. It is something you have to plan with the local municipality. This can certainly slow down your progress. However, this is non-negotiable. It is better to play ball with whatever codes and requirements they pin on you than to harm anyone else because you did not want to consult with your local officials.

  • Take a full inventory of structural integrity, gas lines, or anything else that might hinder adding a shooting range to your home.
  • Do not do anything without triple-checking your home’s blueprints.
  • Consult with local officials to help plan and adhere to codes and guidelines for your shooting range.

You would not mindlessly dig out a giant hole in your backyard to build a swimming pool, right? The same thing goes for building a shooting range. If your shooting range is going to be indoors, for example, it will likely be in a basement. What happens when you do not plan properly and accidentally shoot a gas line or some other calamitous scenario similar to that – you could have avoided it all by consulting someone.

It really helps to build a healthy relationship with these officials, as they make a lot of decisions in your area. It is wise to stay on their good side so you are not held liable for any false complaints or fined more money than you can count. The idea of having an unregistered shooting range in your home is not a great look in the eyes of the public; imagine how it could look in the eyes of a court.

Safety in Your Shooting Range

It goes without saying, but safety should be your absolute number one priority when it comes to building a shooting range at home. Safety comes in more forms than just having a first-aid kit and a phone nearby to call 911. You should be taking inventory of all sorts of equipment such as what kind of concrete is being used, ceiling measurements, soundproofing, protective eyewear, and other helpful gear.

  • Being proactive in this instance is going to pay dividends down the line.
  • Do not cut corners just to get the project done faster.

Concrete in Your Shooting Range

Concrete, is your biggest source of ballistic protection and should act as an immovable object to stop projectiles in their tracks. You should be checking for what type of concrete already exists in whatever surroundings you are building your range in and what type of concrete is about to be used to build the shooting range itself.

Did you know so many types of concrete existed? Hollow core or precast concrete is an absolute no-go and needs to be replaced immediately. These types of concrete are great for building sturdy foundations quickly and will more often than not be filled with foam or otherwise have other inconsistencies that make them ineffective around live-fire. It is paramount to locate these pieces of concrete and replace them.

You will want to find heavier, more solid types of concrete. They should be eight inches thick and specifically use 4,000 PSI concrete in their design. Filled CMU, tilt-up, or pour in place will be your best options. These will ensure the safety of anyone using your shooting range and will keep any bullets from damaging your foundation or possibly straying away from its intended path by splintering the concrete.

Safety Equipment for Your Shooting Range

You should never build a shooting range in your home without taking the time to budget money aside for special equipment designed for live-fire exercises. These pieces of equipment will not only protect your eyes and ears but also make the experience more enjoyable and stress-free so you can focus on bettering yourself as a marksman. There is a fountain of options available to make your home set up a safe and fun environment.

Eyewear is a must for any experience on the range. They protect your eyes from burning in the event of gunpowder blowing back into your face from discharging your weapon. The biggest benefit, however, comes from being shatterproof or otherwise impact resistant. This is a massive factor that comes in handy if debris is present or a spent bullet case hurdles towards your eyes while firing.

Do not go the cheap route with these, though. You should always stick with a trusted brand, and something the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rates highly. The ANSI runs rigorous tests on brands of protective eyewear and has very strict criteria for what makes the cut. Going with a cheaper product or regular eyewear like sunglasses will not protect you. Do your homework and pick up a pair that works.

The same can be said for hearing protection. There are lots of options when it comes to how you protect your ears, whether it be earplugs or over-the-head noise compressors. Shooting a gun is obviously extremely loud and will leave your ears ringing. Over time this will cause loss of hearing if the right protection is not being used. Do the smart thing and get ahead of it by using some combination of hearing protection.

Notable Equipment for Your Shooting Range

Now that all of the precautionary elements of your at-home shooting range are out of the way, it is time to explore some different amenities you can purchase to make the most out of your setup. There are a number of different pieces of equipment to purchase that will not only improve your quality of life but also make it a fun and relaxed place to enjoy yourself without having to turn it into a chore.

  • Target retrievers take time to set up, but they do exactly what the name suggests; retrieve your target. By attaching your target to the apparatus, it will move it along a linear track to and from the user with ease. Consider a wireless system with hidden target clamps to increase safety and reliability.
  • Bullet traps are a necessary part of any home gun range. Once the bullet is fired, it will enter the trap and cause it to lose its momentum to ensure that it does not damage anything and ends up somewhere that it cannot hurt anyone.
  • Shooting lane dividers are great in general, but even more so if you find yourself building a range with more than one lane. They protect each person from any mishaps by being placed between each lane with ballistic-resistant material.

Having any number of these pieces of equipment will make your firing range a safe and enjoyable place to be. It is always more fun when you do not have to worry about all of the things that could go wrong with a lesser setup. Having things like ballistic dividers, bullet traps, and target retrievers are ways to improve everybody’s target practice.

The Benefit of Target Retrievers

Having target retrievers keeps you from physically running back and forth down your shooting lane to set up and replace a target. Common target systems provide wireless capability and include preprograsmmed drills to make your experience fun and enjoyable.

Make sure that you select a range manufacturer that has a history of providing parts and services for your equipment. It’s essential that they are committed to their product and customers. Find a company that provides a warranty greater than 1 year. Bullet Traps Are a Must for Your Shooting Range

Bullet traps are specifically designed to stop the momentum and capture your bullets.

There are several types of bullet traps. However, for an indoor shooting range built at home, you will likely deal with either a steel deceleration trap or rubber berm trap. These traps are necessary to keep bullets from ricocheting all over the range, potentially hitting someone, or damaging your home.

A deceleration trap is essentially a metal chamber that captures fired bullets and relies on their kinetic force to move in a circular motion until they eventually slow down and fall into another container underneath that you can clean out over time. Once the gun is fired, the bullet travels into the trap and decelerates.

A rubber berm trap utilizes a steel structure that is built at a 30-degree angle and holds 2-3’ of chopped rubber. The bullet is fired into the rubber and decelerates in the rubber media. Over time the rubber berm would be cleaned out in order to remove the build-up of lead and copper jacket material.

Shooting Lane Dividers Add Protection

You have, without a doubt, seen a ballistic divider or shooting lane divider before, especially if you were a fan of any cop-dramas on TV. These are what separate the stalls in a shooting range, and they offer a spectrum of benefits. These heavy-duty ballistic steel plates or bulletproof glass panels keep you safe from other people in the firing line or anyone there that might be stopping by to say hello.

Accidents, unfortunately, do happen, and in the event of someone next to you having something go wrong with their firearm, it is important that anyone standing nearby is not injured inadvertently. Bulletproof glass protects you from accidental discharges and makes sure you can see everything going on clearly by being able to see through it at anyone around you. These come in different grades so consider what you need most.

Ballistic steel plates are the heavy-duty variant of this and can withstand just about anything that might take place within its confines.

Ventilation and Filtration in Your Shooting Range

Something you may not have considered yet is how much lead is going to be sitting around your shooting range. These particulates are extremely damaging to your lungs and body in general. The number of toxicities in the air from having a home shooting range is not a joke and should not be taken lightly. Luckily, you can set up a ventilation and filtration system to balance out these chemicals and keep your home safe.

The second you fire your weapon, you are contaminating the air in your shooting range. This is obviously not ideal, especially over an extended period of time. Without ventilation and filtration, there will be smoke build-up which will cause conditions to become hazy, and it will be tougher to breathe in there with all of the contaminants floating around. By installing proper ventilation for a shooting range, you will eliminate these threats.

The key to this is to create negative pressure within the range space, provide proper airflow and install HEPA filtration. The objective is to filter the bad air out and makes sure it does not go outside of the range. These ventilation systems are separate from the house ventilation, and they are naturally pretty expensive, but they are extremely important in ensuring everyone’s safety and health.

Maintaining Your Shooting Range

By now, you have probably started to recognize the need to maintain your shooting range. The best thing you can do for yourself and your firing range is to be proactive towards anything that could possibly go wrong. Work with your range manufacturer and ensure that you have the maintenance protocol understood. By regularly checking your equipment, the status of your ventilation, making sure nothing is broken before use, and cleaning out your bullet trap, your range will perform for a very long time.

Keeping your shooting range properly organized is very important as well.

  • By separating ammunition from firearms or keeping all of your safety equipment and medical equipment readily available, you will be well on your way to making sure no one has anything to worry about.
  • It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to stay ahead of anything that could possibly go wrong.

Your shooting range’s longevity hinges on the amount of upkeep you put into it. Caring for your shooting range regularly will result in a clean and healthy environment for everyone. Going the extra inch one day could go an extra mile the next. Never stop looking for ways to improve your shooting range. Maybe consider hiring someone to help you clean it every month or so, depending on how often you use it.

That being said, do not hesitate to bring in outside help if it becomes too overbearing for you. Good range manufacturers will provide aftermarket services to support warranty, maintenance, and even collect your metals when your traps have filled.

Insuring Your Shooting Range

And last but certainly not least, we have insurance for your shooting range. You will need insurance to make sure you are covered in the event of an accident, be it mechanical or physical.

Even if you wanted to try and run the risk of using your shooting range without insurance, chances are you would have had to file for it as part of an agreement with the local official you consulted to get whatever permits or approvals to build it in the first place. It is oftentimes a requirement by state law, but even if it is not, it is truly in your best interest to get it no matter how careful or responsible you think you are.

There are insurance agents out there who specialize in firearms and shooting ranges. Contact the NSSF (national shooting sports foundation) to obtain recommendations and references.

Surprisingly, in-home gun ranges are becoming more and more popular, and many people see it as a place to escape.

Many people now consider adding a gun range to their homes for the convenience of shooting at their leisure. Adding a gun range to your home may involve retrofitting an existing space or creating a new space. The overarching question is: how much does the typical gun range cost?

In-home gun ranges can cost $50,000-$200,000. The final total is determined largely by the simplicity or complexity of the equipment selected as well as the level of safety you want. To grasp the costs involved, you must understand the requirements involved in a home gun range.

Many factors affect the overall cost of installing a home gun range. These factors also involve decisions that affect the cost of those portions of the design and installation. Before you make any decisions about a home gun range installation, read on to learn the intricacies and requirements of such a project.

What Does an In-Home Range Cost?

The installation of an indoor home shooting range involves a variety of costs. You should expect to incur costs for permitting, engineering services, equipment acquisition, and remodeling or construction of adequate space. Additional costs can involve insurance and ongoing maintenance.

Engineering or Architectural Services

The permitting department may require engineering or architectural drawings to get the required permits for your indoor home shooting range. The cost of having these drawings produced can vary greatly, but in most cases falls between $1,200 and $6,000. Often the cost is based on the estimated cost of the project.

Permitting Fees and Inspection Fees

The permitting process almost always involves fees for both the permit and the follow-up inspections. These fees vary from approximately $125 to $1,000 plus in some cases and may involve permits and fees to different departments and even to different jurisdictions. Your local permitting officials can provide you with a schedule of permit and inspection fees.

Construction Costs

You may plan on retrofitting your indoor shooting range into an existing space or build a new structure to house the range. In either case, there will be costs associated with the construction and remodeling. A good contractor will provide you with an estimate for whatever type of installation you are planning. Remodeling costs may be as low as $100 per square foot or as much as $250 per square foot for new construction.

Ongoing Costs to Consider

Be sure to check with your insurance agent about adding insurance coverage for your indoor home shooting range. Some insurance companies will not insure a home with a gun range. In any case, there will be additional costs for the liability insurance and the coverage for the equipment.

You must also maintain the equipment. Air filtration systems need regularly scheduled maintenance to remain effective. Bullet traps require maintenance as well. The nature of target systems almost ensures regular repair to this equipment.  Maintenance costs could average $50 to $150 per month.

Is It Legal to Have an In-Home Gun Range?

Many cities and counties allow in-home gun ranges if you meet certain conditions. However, there are places where in-home gun ranges are prohibited or strictly controlled, and you must determine the legal issues where you live before you proceed.

Legal challenges can come in various disguises and from different agencies. For example, you may face legal issues from:

  • State agencies such as Health and Safety organizations that control and regulate air quality.
  • Local regulations and ordinances about discharging a firearm in a specific area, noise abatement issues, and zoning restrictions may prohibit any sort of shooting range in certain types of residential areas.
  • Homeowners Associations can exert a significant amount of control over what you can and cannot do on your property. Some covenants and deed restrictions may prohibit the installation of a home gun range on your property.

Before you begin building any indoor home gun range, be sure that you have the appropriate clearances and permits in hand.

Where Will You Put Your Home Gun Range?

Location is a huge factor in building a home gun range. Finding space large enough for a home gun range on most residential lots is a challenge. Retrofitting an existing space may be an option or building a new space if you have the room. Each alternative comes with its challenges.

If you have a large enough lot or acreage, building a new structure to house your home gun range is possible. However, the additional cost of the construction pushes the overall cost of a home gun range in the tens of thousands of dollars and perhaps more.

Renovating an existing space in your home might work if your home has a space suitable in size and location for the installation. Considering the overall size requirements for even a single lane shooting range, this is often impossible in most homes.

For many people, the best option is to retrofit an existing basement. Basements are excellent locations for in-home shooting ranges. The below-grade location provides safe zones without the cost of constructing elaborate concrete or block walls. Ceiling safety measures are not unreasonable in a basement installation.

What Features Do You Want in Your In-Home Shooting Range?

Much of the cost of installing an indoor home shooting range comes from the installed range equipment. Range equipment includes bullet traps, baffles, air handling and filtration, target systems, and auxiliary areas.

A home indoor shooting range in a basement with a simple bullet trap and air filtration system may cost ten to twenty-five thousand dollars to install. A space as little as twenty feet in length and four feet wide is adequate as a modest home gun range.

If you want to shoot larger calibers or rifles, the cost goes up. Larger calibers require more extensive protection from stray rounds and heavier bullet trap systems. Generally, you need at least twenty-five yards or seventy-five feet for a rifle caliber indoor home shooting range.

The sophistication of your target systems is also a cost factor. Simple target stands are relatively cheap, or you may fabricate target stands as needed. Automatic retrieval target systems can get quite expensive and require ongoing maintenance to keep them in top operating condition.

The Final Figures

You are required to install special air handling and filtration equipment and more elaborate stray bullet protection, the overall cost of an in-home shooting range can cost a hundred thousand dollars or more. Doing your homework before starting an in-home shooting range project is essential.

Private home gun range with ballistic shooting stalls and target retriever

Few things offer as much joy and freedom as being able to shoot your firearms in your own private gun range. A home shooting range provides more than just a fun venue for shooting and a place to entertain your friends, it also provides you with training scenarios to hone your abilities as a shooter and develop the skills you need to protect and defend yourself, your family, and your home. If you’ve decided to build a private shooting range, there are many considerations to make sure you create a high-quality, engaging, and economical range that is reliable, easy to maintain, and safe.

Experience

Select an experienced shooting range vendor to work with your architect and general contractor. Shooting ranges are highly specialized, so your architect will certainly have questions regarding the design. Action Target™ designs, builds, and installs commercial and private gun ranges worldwide, and has the experience you need to build a quality home gun range. Action Target shooting range consultants are ready to assist with custom range designs and drawings for your home gun range. Planning

Consider how you present your plans to the city in which you are building your range. Some homeowners prefer to postpone installing a shooting range until after they occupy the home, often listing the space on the plans as cold storage, an archery range, or a panic room, and use the space accordingly until they are ready to build out the shooting range. However, in-home shooting ranges require careful planning during the design phase of the home to ensure proper dimensions, materials, penetrations, and space for the shooting range equipment. When planning a home range, meet with local zoning and planning departments early on to understand any codes with which you must comply.

Safety

When it comes to shooting ranges, safety is paramount. When designing a range, the materials used must provide complete safety for shooters. Walls should be solid concrete at least 8” thick (filled CMU, tilt-up, or poured in place), and use at least 4,000 PSI concrete. The ceiling should also use at least 4,000 PSI concrete, but you should avoid hollow core or other pre-cast concrete that contains voids or foam because it offers reduced ballistic protection. Solid concrete walls and ceilings provide the best solution to dampen noise and offer extra ballistic protection—crucial if your range is in a basement with occupied space above. The floor should use 5,000 PSI concrete (3,000 PSI min).

Purpose

What is the primary purpose of your home shooting range? Leisure, entertainment, 50BMG mag dumps? If you begin with a clear understanding about how you intend to use your range, Action Target range consultants can design a home shooting range to meet your needs and identify the right equipment and controls to operate it. By working with Action Target, you can ensure that you build a range that not only fits best with your budget but provides you with equipment that is tailored and built to last.

Why is this important for a homeowner considering installing a private gun range? Imagine needing service, or parts, only to discover that the vendor is no longer in business. Or worse, imagine you need to have several products serviced and you must coordinate with multiple manufacturers. Action Target simplifies the process of owning and maintaining a home gun range by being the expert for all equipment installed. Further, Action Target has a proven track record of maintaining range equipment—our longest-running target retriever has been in operation for over 15 years. When it comes to products, choose a company that offers everything you need for your home range, and who stands behind their products with long warranties.

Target Retrievers

Perhaps the most important choice you make in designing your private shooting range is the type of target retriever used. Action Target offers multiple retrievers to fit nearly any budget, but where possible, we recommend that customers use the Genesis retriever. The Genesis features pre-loaded games and training drills developed by leading firearms trainers to challenge every shooter. Whether you want to train or just simply be entertained, the Genesis can meet all your shooting needs. The addicting scenarios associated with a variety of dynamic targets provide you with an entertaining and unique shooting experience unlike any other.

Bullet Trap

For home gun ranges that do not expect a high volume of annual shots fired, a Rubber Berm Trap is often the best and most economic bullet trap solution. At low volumes, a Rubber Berm Trap requires little maintenance and lasts a very long time. Periodically the Rubber Berm requires mining to remove lead and maintain a safe environment, which service Action Target offers. Beyond that, regular maintenance to control rubber depth and fire retardant is required only periodically. The Vortex steel trap offers home gun range owners a high-volume option that simplifies lead collection. While the steel bullet trap has a higher up-front investment, it reduces lifetime maintenance costs by automatically collecting bullets in its deceleration chamber, eliminating the need for fire retardant application and preventing routine maintenance on rubber depth.

Ballistic Dividers

Ballistic dividers are extremely important when you have multiple lanes in your private gun range. These dividers can stop handgun and rifle rounds in the case of an accidental discharge. Action Target offers a full range of ballistic dividers, ranging from very economical to completely customized. A full line of accessories are available for ballistic dividers, including different table configurations for rifle and pistol, muzzle blast barriers, brass deflectors for shooter comfort, and rifle hangers for stowing unused firearms during sessions. Whether functionality, aesthetics, or budget is your goal, Action Target has you covered—literally.

Ventilation and Filtration

Another important safety factor in a home shooting range is the ventilation system. The shooting range ventilation system must be separate from the house system because it filters out harmful lead particulates and heavy metals. Ideally, your ventilation system should achieve a laminar negative air flow of 75 FPM, but not less than 50 FPM, and use an air filtration bank of HEPA filters. Action Target takes care of your ventilation needs, designing and installing systems guaranteed to meet all OSHA and EPA standards.

Life-Long Maintenance

Properly maintaining a home shooting range directly impacts its long-term operation. When properly maintained, you’ll enjoy a lifetime of hassle-free shooting in the comfort of your own home range. To ensure your equipment continues to function properly, Action Target provides a wide range of aftermarket services, programs, and products.
