Open to active law enforcement officers, LETC delivers four full days of advanced training led by world-class instructors with real-world operational experience. For more than three decades, Action Target has combined expert instruction and a comprehensive training curriculum into one of the industry’s premier law enforcement training events, equipping attendees with practical skills they can apply in the field and bring back to their agencies.

In partnership with the Utah Valley University Police Academy, Action Target created the Joseph Shinners Scholarship, which funds one fully sponsored LETC registration each year in memory of Master Police Officer Joseph Shinners of the Provo Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty in January 2019. Action Target also offers the Bill Hooser Scholarship in partnership with the Utah County Fraternal Order of Police, honoring Sergeant Bill Hooser of Santaquin, Utah, who gave his life in the line of duty on May 5, 2024.

We recently partnered with Goodyear PD in Goodyear, AZ, USA to add a full-scale indoor shooting range to their department headquarters.

Key Features of Goodyear PD’s Indoor Shooting Range

In this build, versatility, practicality, and durability were our highest priorities. We wanted to provide Goodyear PD with the ability to modify and adapt their training to the needs of their officers. With that, the range includes: an eight lane, 25-yard tactical range with our Vortex Steel Bullet Trap, floor-to-ceiling SureStop Rubber wall baffles allowing for 180 degree live fire training, and SmartRange Axis range controls for both the HVAC system and range target systems. The indoor shooting range at Goodyear PD is 100% lead free making it much safer for officers to train without exposure to harmful lead dust, and makes cleaning/maintaining the facility much simpler.

What is the Average Amount of Land Needed for an Indoor Gun Range?

The average indoor firing range has a footprint of 2 acres of land. You will need acreage to support each firing bay, retail space, register, classroom, bathrooms, storage, office space, and parking. 

The average range sizes are between 10,000 and  20,000 sq. ft. and range from 1-2 Bays with 7 to 14 lanes.

What Is the Purpose of Your Gun Range?

The amount of land required for a gun range will vary depending on the usage. 

There are choices to make when you decide to have a range. You must determine if you will have an emphasis on range, retail, training and/or custom builds. Once this is decided it will be essential to work with an architect to review these choices in order to determining space requirements. A few questions that need to be addressed upfront include:

• How many bays and shooting lanes are you planning to install?
• What products and quantities are you planning to retail in your store?
• Will your retail space focus on firearms and accessories?
• How large of a retail space is needed to support displays and inventory?
• Are you planning to provide regular training classes and if so how much capacity does your classroom require?
• Do you expect to have a gunsmith or armorer onsite? If either will you provide the option to have customers customize their firearms?
• Will your staff require offices, cubicles, lockers, or lunch area?
• Will you provide uni-sex bathrooms or designated bathroom?
• Are you planning to install wash sinks outside the range?
• Do you plan to have a VIP lounge or snack area?

Deciding the purpose for your range will help you determine how much space you need. 

How Much Would it Cost to Build a Gun Range from the Ground Up?

It will cost approximately $350,000 for a range equipment and bullet containment. This does not include the land, or building cost.

Where do I Find My State Gun Laws?

To find the laws that govern guns and their uses, you should check with your local and state agencies. You can find these agencies with a few quick Google searches. Be sure to enter your city, state, and county names as well as the term “gun laws and ordinances.”

These Government offices will be able to tell you where and when you are allowed to fire your guns.

• And Local Law enforcement

You are not allowed to fire a gun within the city limits in most states unless you are at an indoor gun range. Check your state-specific regulations.

Should I Buy an Existing Gun Range?

Buying an existing gun range is beneficial because it is already zoned as a firing range. It is less expensive to buy an existing range because you do not have to worry about the expense of construction. It is recommended that the property be inspected by a licensed inspector before purchasing it and that you confirm with the state that the range is compliant with all local and state regulations.

Action Target products used in this video: The Dual Running Man (DRM) Pro This target system is the most powerful and feature-rich running man system ever designed. It boasts 3HP motors, ultra-wear resistant pulleys, speeds up to 20 fps, realistic acceleration, and an easy to use control interface for use on tablets and mobile phones. The DRM Pro uses two lateral traveling, non-turning target carriers capable of moving independently from one another because they are mounted on two separate tracks that run parallel to each other. Paper, cardboard, and plastic targets can be attached to the Dual Running Man by stapling or clamping them to the standard 1” x 2” wood sticks secured to the target carriers with clamps.

The Fixed Lateral 360 (FL360) This target system allows targets to be repositioned laterally along a fixed rail without the use of tools. Simply unlock the target and it will slide left and right for positioning in groups or creating open spaces on the range. Used in conjunction with the Dual Running Man target system, these targets can represent bystanders or perpetrators to simulate real-world scenarios.

TriCounty Tactical approached Action Target with the idea to create this mobile shooting range. The goal of this mobile range was to meet the unique demands of law enforcement training, concealed carry training and certification, and also provide a new experience for gun enthusiasts throughout the greater Chicago area.

Action Target designed and built an advanced shooting range contained within a 53 foot semi-trailer completely armored in AR500 steel. The range includes advanced target retrievers, a custom air filtration system and a custom rubber berm trap for bullet containment and recycling. The trailer also utilizes an onboard diesel generator for untethered powering allowing it to be used virtually anywhere.

The safety of the shooter and anyone outside the range was paramount in the construction process. A great amount of time and resources was devoted to ensure the shooting range could be used safely in any location by anyone from the novice to expert shooter.

The mobile range has a “no blue sky” design, meaning there is continuous overhead ballistic containment from the firing line to the bullet trap for tactical use. This was accomplished by armoring all four sides of the trailer with AR500 armored steel.

A sound abatement material called PEPP was used to cover the side walls, overhead baffles and the area behind the shooter to reduce the noise generated from shooting and reduce reverberation in the range. The PEPP also helps contain bullet splatter from errant rounds.

Three shooters can train from the standing position at one of three clear shooting stalls or the table can be collapsed at each position to practice drawing from the holster or shooting from a prone or kneeling position.

Bullets are safely captured in a custom rubber berm trap that is capable of stopping all handgun rounds as well as rifle rounds up to .50-cal BMG.

To meet the unique training demands of law enforcement, the Mancom Touch Plus was installed as the target retrieval system. The Touch Plus offers 360 degree turning as well as blue, red and white LED lights on the carrier and programmable scenarios for different qualification courses.

The three target retrievers can be controlled by the individual shooter from each shooting stall or by a range master from a master control system.

Carey’s Small Arms Range Ventilation designed and installed the HVAC system. The ventilation system keeps shooters and trainers safe by creating airflow that pushes the contaminants generated from firing guns down range. The HVAC system meets or exceeds all OSHA, NIOSH and EPA requirements by using a series of pre-filters and HEPA filters. Once the air from inside the range is filtered it is exhausted back into the environment cleaner than it was when the air entered the range.

All of these safety and training features came together to provide a new training tool available to any agency that has a training need but lacks funding for their own shooting range. It also serves the civilian market by providing a shooting range that can be delivered on demand.
